For the most part, pre-mattel things tend to have a better quality than premattel items. This is just the one main difference.
Okay, I'm sorta new to AG collecting--but not the dolls--and I have a question. What's the difference in pre Mattel and post Mattel things? I haven't really been up to date about that, other than to know that Mattel bought out PC in the late 90s and took over fully in 2000. I have a pre-Mattel Ida Bean for Addy, but I didn't even notice until I won the auction. I just wanted a doll for a little cheaper than price + shipping on the site. I've heard things like soft lashes, and white bodies (that I understand) but why do some people want pre-Mattel things or dolls more?

Nethilia- I don't mind Mattel quality as much as other members of the board, I still thing AG makes some great stuff (granted, there are areas that they could approve) but I love my Mattel dolls and clothes.
White body is the type of muslin used on the very first dolls, Samantha, Molly, and Kirsten. When they produced Felicity, they moved to a "tan" body because of her lower cut dresses. Only the three original dolls can be found with white bodies.
Also, PM dolls are a little clubbier, have softer lashes that match the color of their hair, and have a softer vinyl. Other than that, they are mostly the same as they were before Mattel took over.
I love finding out all there is to the history of AG, and this site has a lot of up to date info. [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_girl_dolls"]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_girl_dolls[/ame]
Check it out, and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask,
